The past couple days have been filled with quite a few activities. Friday evening Erin took me for a drive around Buffalo, so that I could see some of the places she enjoys. We stopped by her favorite coffee shop where I had a nice mocha on a comfy couch. From there we went to Lake Erie. We didn't stop there but looked out over it. Then we drove to the University of Buffalo which is where Jen goes to school.
Before heading to Niagara Falls, we ate dinner at a little BBQ place that had really good garlic mashed potatoes. The waiter was slow and inattentive but the food was still pretty good. Then we headed out for the Falls. Erin debated whether we should park on the American side and walk to Canada or drive over to Canada and park there. All she knew was that she wanted me to go into Canada.
We ended up driving into Canada. The border guard was really friendly and let us through without too many questions. Eventually we found some parking and walked down to the where you could see the Falls. They really are beautiful! There was a lot of mist that gets you a little damp. It's amazing how much water falls down. The fall itself was smaller than I had imagined, but the width of the fall was much larger. I thought they were quite beautiful.
On the way back into America we were really berated by the American border officer. She wanted to know what a Texan was doing in NY with someone who lived in Buffalo. Where I was staying. Etc. It was unpleasant.
The next day we got ready to go around 11 so that we could tour the art museum in Buffalo. Between 11 and 1 pm it is open to the public for free. Right now they have a special exhibit that is sculpture. There was one room that requested parents to view it before taking their children in. Inside was a doll looking thing that had a couch fallen over him. A projector put an image on the head of the doll (which was a screen) that showed the artist in the dark with a greenish face. He would yell out things like "Hey you! Get away from me and leave me alone! Can't you tell I don't want you here." Then further back was a little room that had a bunch of wax heads hanging from the ceiling in a circle. Creepy.
The permanent collection of the museum, however, was quite nice. They had a couple of my favorite sculptures like Calder and Giacometti. Then they had paintings by all sorts of great artists. I enjoyed the Miro paintings and Ben Shan.
More updates to come later...
