I don't think that most people really think about alternatives to MS Office. It used to be that Corel had a fairly decent program with WordPerfect. That, however, seems to have fallen out of favor in the past few years. Even more than not thinking about competing programs, I don't think there are many people who realize there are free options that are substantively better than MS Office.
Today Slashdot linked to a guy who did a through performance test between Office and OpenOffice. OpenOffice is sort of like the Firefox of document applications.
