You can now sign up for gmail at the website. Some of you might have noticed that a few months ago, Google silently changed the gmail.google.com to switch to mail.google.com. I'm not sure why they switched over that way, but I think it's a little more nature. Just type in mail.google.com and you'll be there.
A lot of people wonder about the cell phone thing. It's fine to wonder because most companies would love to have your cell number, however, google doesn't care about that. They are just coming up with an inventive way of keeping spammers from loading up on accounts (might have worked better if they didn't give ever gmail account holder virtually unlimited invites) and spamming all.
