Whether you like it or not, talent alone is not the most efficient way to find theater work. I've posted about networking before as the way to get your plays produced. If you're graduating with a some sort of a theater (acting, directing, stage managing, etc) degree then you need to start thinking about networking.
The American Theatre Wing has made it a little simpler. There will be two new groups to make it easier to network: the Theatre Intern Group and Spingboard NYC. More information is available here.
Just keep in mind that NYC is not the only place to start a theater career. Even if you don't want a smaller market theater company there are plenty of opportunities in a few other big cities. Most notably are Chicago, LA, Seattle, and Toronto. It seems that markets have been getting stronger in Denver (they've had two really good theater companies open in the last year), Phoenix, Raleigh, the Twin Cities, and San Franscisco. And the market has shrunk in other cities which would include (unfortunately) Dallas.
Good luck!
