Can anyone go to MIT?

If the author of this piece was able to get his phd from MIT than maybe I should have applied. Clearly he could have been more persuasive than this, right? Professor Brian Leiter has listed reasons why it is nothing but silly.

UPDATE: A couple of reasons I think the article is void of intellectual analysis. First it compares ownership of items in the 70s to ownership today without accounting for lower costs. It costs less to own a washer now than it did in the 70s. It costs MUCH less to fly today than it did in the 70s.

Another thing that the author doesn't take into account is debt that the lower class is in today. It's easier to get credit cards and even loans. Therefore owning tvs, dvd players, cell phones, etc is easy to do. That doesn't mean the lower class families who own these aren't in debt because of it. Unfortunately, this was ignored because the author knew that it wouldn't support his thesis.
