Paying the Piper

Looks like the Border Patrol hasn't been doing their job as well as they should in exchange for some cutbacks...

Top officials of the U.S. Border Patrol failed to act on allegations they received in 2000 and 2001 of widespread kickbacks being paid to border agents in Arizona, and later investigations by the Department of Homeland Security avoided holding high-level officials responsible, said a new government report released yesterday.

What's unfortunate about this is that these behaviors exaturbate the volatile situation of people believing illegal immigrants can just "hop the river." In reality, it's corruption and collusion between US government officials and glorified pimps or drug dealers who orchestrate a lot of this. In return for this a few people on both sides are getting rich and a lot of honest immigrants are being targeted by American extremists for their status in America (LPR, work visa, temporary visa, etc). It's all unfortunate and Bush should get this corruption cleared up.
