Linking Enemies

Recently Google enacted what has quickly become a new industry standard in hyperlinking for comments. It is the "nofollow" tag attribute that will render any pagerank transfer null. Supposedly this will reduce the amount of comment spam. I have my doubts.

Anyhow, the point is that the "nofollow" tag will be inserted into comments on bloggers systems automatically. I think that other commenting systems are adding it. You can also utilize the "nofollow" with your own linking -- if you wish.

Say you come to my blog and see something quite ridiculous. I've scorned you before, so you don't want to give me the benefit of a link. The best example of this seems to be the little fighting between Instapundit and Tony Pierce. According to Pierce, the instapundit refused to link to him anymore because of a little blog scuffle. Egos were bruised, feelings were hurt, and links were taken away. Boo.

Anyhow, if Instapundit doesn't want to give Pierce any pagerank benefit of a link then he doesn't have to anymore.

All that people need to do is add the "nofollow" tag to the end of their hyperlinks to take away all of the search engine/pagerank benefit of a link.

1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a link war.
